shopping local

Hi troops,
I have read all the blogs about buying local to support our farmers. I have been buying eggs from Bill and Debbie Snyder at Towns Edge Farm, located right beside the Ligonier Sr. High School on Springer Road. Deb's chickens are Barred Rock and they lay brown eggs and are free range chickens. When I took my grandson, Justin, with me this past summer to pick up a dozen, Deb gave him a slice of bread to feed the hens. They were all over the yard and came running to get some as Justin kept tossing bread closer and closer to him so he could get them close enough to touch. He finally got one within range and got to feel some feathers before the hen beat feet. Justin was grinning from ear to ear!!! We just bought some beef today and the price was right. Bill and Deb call it a starter pack for people who can't use a half beef(freezer not big enough or just two, like us). It is a 75 pound pack of beef, 25 lbs of hamburger, 25 lbs. of steaks and 25 lbs. of roasts. All labeled and frozen. Filled our little freezer right up. Deb has lots of brown eggs to spare, the new hens are are laying and catching up to the regulars. They also sell pork products and have a stand at the farmers market just down the road from their house in the summer.

Thanks Butch, I have been meaning to try them out. Especially for eggs. Though the people we get meat from sell eggs too, so many choices :-D this is good. We get half a beef aka several freezers....:) Can't beat it though. you don't have the "nasties" that some other meats do. Did not know about the pork good to know! I want to gather info about where to get other things that you'd know where to during summer aka the country market (still call it farmers market) but forget or don't know in the winter. I'd LOVE to figure out how and where to get fresh homegrown veggies during our winter in town. I've been on the maryjanes farm forum asking the farmgirls so I have some ideas.

It would be really nice to get a single post up about each of our local farms and other sources of meat, eggs and produce. If we include name, address, phone, a nice blurb and a photo, then we can create a separate link group for these resources! So, hwen you buy eggs, take a picture and compile info and we can promote em. ;)

I just came from getting eggs and had a nice chat about doing a post re the farm with some photos. I'll get it up this week. 'Bout time I started earning my keep around here.

The eggs are wonderful, and I've been unable to resist making fresh pasta with them. We've also been making a mean tortilla (a Spanish potato frittata) with them. At a mere $2.25 a dozen, they're a steal.

That would be fabulous, Lauren.
