People of Ligonier,
This news is sad to report, but Linn Run, Laurel Mountain, and Laurel Summit all made it on the list of parks in our area to be closed. The date of the closings are unknown at this time.
Please, keep writing to the congressmen and express your opposition to this abomination!!!!
Our local businesses will also lose revenue from tourists visiting these areas, and our schools will not be able to take our children to OUR park for field trips!
Again I am posting the links needed to contact the congress. Please take a second of your time to let them know how you feel. The parks belong to us!

If the economy isn't having enough of a downturn, this will do it for a lot of people and businesses. Get your letters written and phone calls made folks.
Yes, it is NOT too late to take action on this.
We have are so very fortunate to have an abundant amount of beautiful, natural resources at our 'disposal'-please DO NOT let them be taken away!!!
This is outrageous! Our government is preaching about our economy and that they are doing what they are doing for the people. Well thats bull and this proves it. Our government just took our park. People were able to go to Linn Run for free and hike in the woods, swim in the creeks, have picnics and get togethers. How many hundreds of people rely on the spring water that Linn Run offeres?People whose wells and springs that arnt clean enough to drink! What are those people supposed to do? Will the government give them safe drinking water? I think not. I for one am going to make my opinion known to "our" State Reps. Maybe if the get enough negative letters they will think twice before doing this again.

Does the government care that some people rely on parks like Linn Run for things like drinking water? Or as a inexpensive getaway with their families? A place where a group of friends can get together for a picnic? Without parks what will people who are suffering job losses among other economic downfalls be left with for enjoyment?
I'm curious as to what "closed" means? How do you "close" a park? Are they referring to the maintenance buildings, restrooms, etc? Can the spring at Linn Run be shut off with a "closed" sign on it? Forgive my ignorance, I'm not sure how this all works. Any explanation would be helpful!
Closed would include among other things, cabin rentals, picnic tables, trash containers and gates across parking areas etc. Of course access to trails would be available by foot but maintenance would be non-existent.
I see. Interesting. Hypothetically, could a group of citizens assume responsibility if the government decided to close a park due to financial cutbacks?
Where can I find more information on this? Is there a press release or website I can refer to? I would like to take action and get the word out, but I would like some more hard facts first.
I talked to a few people today , they said the MELLON's would not let this happen. who knows!
Please dont loose sight of the real issues. This is going to hit our local economy like a runaway truck! What about the people that will loose thier jobs! They will be forced to go on unemployment. They will loose health benefits. Our local businesses will see no foot traffic from tourists visiting the park. What about the people that have paid in advance to vacation at the cabins?
Why is this being kept so quiet? I think we all need to ask our representatives "What exactly is going on here" and demand answers!
One of my customers recently said to me, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask not what you can do for your country--ask what can you do for yourself." The parks have not been closed--yet. Even if they are to be closed, I too would like to know where I can get more information about this. If, by "closed" that means no maintenance, since I am a near constant user of these parks, I would be interested in learning what individuals or private groups could do to pick up where the state leaves off.
I too would like to know the source of the original posters information, I have done a news search and checked for DCNR announcements and found nothing.
I agree Amy- I feel that we still need to take action and voice our opionions and outrage to 'our' state reps, however; if all else fails, we need to assume responsibility of the trails and what not.
BUT, my other outcry is the loss of jobs for people who have worked there 10, 20+ years, their families, their loss of benefits.
What about the people who have already reserved the cabins our there for family vacations?
Also, as has been mentioned-the spring. There are many of us who live nearby who are not fortunate to have clean drinking water from our own wells.
How about the negative impact this is going to have on our local economy?
There are so many consequences of this 'closure'...

Here is last week's DCNR announcement. It doesn't name parks, but it says 35 are slated to be closed. This is real.
I do believe this is a way for the individual to get involved with your representatives' decision making. Start writing and calling.
Sunday's P-G:
The department has yet to determine which of its 117 parks would need to close July 1 under the Republican budget plan for fiscal 2009-10.Read moreIs there newer news?
Just a quick note to let everyone know:Read the Latrobe Bulletin tonight. The possible closing of Linn Run, Laurel Summit and Laurel Mountain made the front page. You will get more info from there.
so i have done some research on this issue. the wonderful kim ward, who is westmoreland countys senator, voted yes on this. this is all part of SB 850 which is the senate version of the Pa budget. hopefully this doesnt get through the house!!!
It will make it to the house unless people write to the state reps. and complain about it.
