I'm the Most Horrible!

Margaret O'Brien:

All Hallow's Eve

It as about this time of night back on Saint Agnes Lane that Halloween made the change.
It came alive.

The moon set above the steeple of the ancient church glowing softly against the stones on cemetery hill.
This is my childhood memory of All Hallow's Eve.

All the children walking back in the dark from trick or treating, wonderfully terrified.

Help! Pumpkin Search

I just got back from walking 'all over town' to find a pumpkin to carve but no, no, no. We are all sold out. (Agway/GE) Any tips? Keep in mind, I am car less & have little money. I won't lie... when less people were out I was Very tempted to 'borrow' one from the sidewalk/front of store. Shh! Happy Halloween All!

I am excited for my first Ligonier Halloween. I heard I should get a decent amount of 'treaters' at my location. Blog to come on my reflections.. if I'm in the mood.

Why did the dead baby cross the road?

Good morning, Ligonier and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

OOOHHH, there's a scary garbage truck calling BRING OUT YE DEAD!  BRING OUT YE DEAD!

Not only do they have the audacity to locate in prime retail (in the center of town) but they do not have the decency to conform to local sign standards. Back lite plastic signs might be OK in other communities but not in Ligonier…. if you are going to join the community…respect the community.

Speaking of Scary Movies

Some scary movies have great moments, like the moment in "The Shining" when Shelley Duvall wakes up and sees "redrum" in the mirror and it reads "murder."
Some are fun because they're corny.

Some are fun to watch because they're awful. I remember one ("It Came From Hell"??) that had a walking tree stump that came to life and terrorized the local tribes. I don't know how, it walked so slow anyone with a saw could have cut it down. I think it was the Tabonga, or maybe Nabonga.

The absolute worst was the original "Satan's School for Girls." I watched it, the whole way through, on two different occasions, just because I thought it was so bad, it just HAD to get better. You'd think I would have known better the second time.

I do miss my little black Cloe...

"Given the ongoing chaos at Ligonier Valley School Board meetings, it is only logical to ask if some Ligonier Valley residents are living in total denial of the facts regarding their school district:
• Ligonier Valley school enrollment has declined more than 46 percent since 1973.
• The district's health care costs, which now total $2,556,214 a year, will increase an additional $255,621 next school year and approach $3,092,000 by 2011.
• The Pennsylvania School Boards Association estimates the district faces a $161,427 increase in teacher pension retirement payments, which will bring the district's annual contribution up to $719,508."

I just had an interesting thought. Did it ever occur to anyone why it takes 7 council members to run a town of one square mile with 1700 people but only 3 township supervisor to run an area of 92 square miles and 7000 people? Also, why does it take 3 people to run the Borough office but only 1 person to run the township office? It would be interesting to see what kind of savings the Borough would see if the council and office staff was reduced. Just a thought!!!

Video Spot

I'm planning & hoping to rent a few Halloween creepy movies to shut up with after the trick-or-treaters stop by.. I have yet to visit our town's rental shop. I saw one review online stating the owner enjoys horror.

I am wondering; is this true, what are the hours (I work until 6pm tomorrow) and how easy is it to sign up!

What films do you recommend for an old fashioned (I'm a bit younger than our average Living blogger) scary, Gorey film fest of Halloween stay up all night proportions?

Yes, popcorn is a Must.

Thank you all & Let our Halloween Eve creep closer upon us all sleeping in Ligonier..

Planning christmas presents

I was told the teachers aren't exchanging presents this year, much to my relief. I am the farthest from a grinch but it gets to be too much. When chatting with one teacher about this we agreed a dinner get together would be more enjoyable than any thing. I'm curious what you all do and give and traditions. Yes it is a bit early but my mind is going on and planning. I also found out there's a family that keeps it simple and the true meaning of christmas in view by allowing the kids to think hard about asking santa for one thing. They do other things and make a cake for jesus. I was so proud of them when I heard that.

America’s spy agencies want to read your blog posts, keep track of your Twitter updates — even check out your book reviews on Amazon.

In-Q-Tel, the investment arm of the CIA and the wider intelligence community, is putting cash into Visible Technologies, a software firm that specializes in monitoring social media. It’s part of a larger movement within the spy services to get better at using ”open source intelligence” — information that’s publicly available, but often hidden in the flood of TV shows, newspaper articles, blog posts, online videos and radio reports generated every day.

If and when health care reform finally passes, we will have successfully ameliorated only half of the crisis. The treatment half. The next step has to be focused upon doing something about the poisoned filth we've collectively nicknamed "food."

Vitamin D

First, let me say that probably my greatest pet peeve is what people tell me "what you should do". I once drew a line in the sand with a friend over that as she was constantly lecturing me on "what you should be doing". She stopped and we are still friends. NOW, the point of my posting is this: After nearly seventeen years of fatigue, joint and muscle pain, memory loss, balance problems, numbness and tingling, serious cognitive problems (I kept forgetting to turn off the ignition of my car!), I was diagnosed with severe Vitamin D deficiency. My levels were one-third what they should have been and at a very dangerous level. The rheumatologist prescribed a once-a-week 50,000 (that's right--fifty thousand) unit dose of Vitamin D. The next morning after taking the first pill, I felt an amazing difference! and every week I continue to feel better. If you are having any of these symptoms, I would urge you to tell your MD you want your D tested. My experience has been nothing short of miraculous. After years of doctoring I had found the right one who listened to me, did not dismiss me as crazy, old, depressed (a favorite), menopausal, a whiner, a hypochondriac or all the other things we get told. As over-the-top as I get with my writing (I admit it, it's part of my charm ;) I am conservative when it comes to medical stuff. I would never want anyone to self-medicate. BUT look this up on the web (see especially Vitamin D and depression/anxiety). Beware of the kooky stuff out there, of course. But one simple blood test could change your life. Seriously, I was thinking about going to the Bethlen Home when my dog was gone. Let me know how things turn out.

Once the government takes control of health care, then

all they have to do is make a case that ANYTHING is bad for health and then they can outlaw it, like smoke, like sugar, like GUNS, like - you fill in the blank.

This is the golden road to a major shifting of power from those who can create wealth to those who can create

It's not about health.  It's about power.

The People are pawns in this game.

breaking news .......recession officially over

The U.S. government reported Thursday morning that the economy surged out of its longest recession since World War II and grew by 3.5 percent in the third quarter, spawning hopes for a lasting recovery.
The return to growth was fueled in part by two popular government programs the "cash for clunkers" auto trade-in program and a first-time homebuyers tax credit as well as a turnaround in manufacturing after the spring bankruptcy of two U.S.

Hi Istvan, thanks for the invite. It's okay that your guitar is in the shop right now. Currently,

[How's that for using all options of communication?  LOL]

We have civil ceremonies that are not recognized by some religions as marriages, right?

So what's the big deal about drawing a line in definition between a civil union and a marriage.  Leave marriage to be defined by personal and most likely religious beliefs.  Leave civil unions to be defined as legal contracts to form a union of two people, which is all they are anyway.  People who add vows to a civil union, really do so by choice.

I know many of you will not agree with me here but I think it's time to allow people the freedom to practice their religion openly or privately.  I also think it's time to allow civil unions between two adults regardless of their sex.

Here's a discussion in the Washington Times.

When we impost religious on others, the others take defensive positions and we end up with everyone pushing each other.  Live and let live.  Stop forcing people to hide their prayer.  Stop forcing people to hide their love.

of course mandatory purchase of health insurance isn't constitutional

"The government has never required people to buy any good or service as a condition of lawful residence in the United States," the CBO said. The statement was part of an analysis of then-President Clinton's ill-fated health care reform plan, which also required that all Americans purchase health insurance plans.
