April 1, 2011   Granny Earth Presents
Mother Nature’s Medicine Cabinet
(Aesculus hippocastanum)
Horse chestnut is a bitter, astringent herb that lowers fever, reduces local edema. It has diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. The main constituent of the herb- aescin, is a complex mix of saponins, having excellent anti-inflammatory properties.
Internal use - For circulatory problems, including hardening of arteries, stroke, heart attack, varicose veins, phlebitis, hemorrhoids and swelling- following trauma.  In some cases it’s injected to reduce swelling in swollen joints and fractures.
External use - Due to the excellent venous tonic effect of Horse Chestnut (when applied topically), it helps prevent vein/capillary fragility- is great in anti-aging skin care. It also balances circulation, promoting clear and good skin tone- used in quality lotions. Due to the saponins, it has potent anti-inflammatory effects.
CAUTION- There’ve been reports of kidney damage in individuals who consumed large quantities of aescin at a single time. Horse Chestnut must be avoided by individuals suffering from bleeding disorders- as thinning of blood is induced by coumarin (aesculin) present this herb.

Lately, it’s been my pleasure to meet so many who are making a transition from the ‘health-damaging’ foods (in grocery stores), to healing foods- i.e. Mother Nature’s WEEDS!
Transitioning to a plant-based diet-  an individual choice that can take time.
We tend to eat for reasons having less to do with nutrition and more to do with comfort, emotional attachment and tradition.  It's been said that- ‘changing one's diet is more difficult than changing religions’. However, once the addictive/processed ‘foods’ are eliminated, it becomes easier to stay the course. For most people (addicted to the Standard American Diet) the transition to a healthy diet may seem difficult.  Just begin by adding raw vegetables to your diet. This may take a period of several days/weeks, but once it becomes habit, those health-damaging foods will be easier to let go of. Then, you’ll be more ready to explore those WEEDS-  FREE, HEALING, and WONDERFUL!
