Islamists against everybody else.

Hundreds of Muslims in Bangladesh burned at least four Buddhist temples and 15 homes of Buddhists on Sunday after complaining that a Buddhist man had insulted Islam, police and residents said.
Members of the Buddhist minority in the Cox’s Bazar area in the southeast of the country said unidentified people were bent on upsetting peaceful relations between Muslims and Buddhists.
Muslims took to the streets in the area late on Saturday to protest against what they said was a photograph posted on Facebook that insulted Islam.

in addition to voter ID, how about adding a test?

Here's an interesting test. Pick 10 random high school students from AH and another 10 from LVSD - same grade level - and ask them these two questions:

1. Who was president of the United States when the Louisiana Purchase took place?
2. What is 80% of 80?

Hubby and I were watching the IUP station the other night and the two college students competing is a quiz game couldn't correctly answer these questions. We were stunned.

How could you get through high school and into college without knowing this?

When I posted this as a comment on a previous post, the next comment raised the question of whether or not we should have certain knowledge to vote. Here's the comment:

"Diane, I do agree with you. But quite frankly public schools are failing our kids in education. Just watch an interview with Obama supporters or Occupy protesters and see how they answer current questions on Government. I also believe we should have to have certain knowledge just to vote."

I agree. We require a demonstration of knowledge by a test before gaining the privilege to drive. I believe we ought to require a demonstration of knowledge by a test before gaining the privilege to vote. This would eliminate the motivation to create an ignorant populace and perhaps might encourage the teaching of at least the most basic understanding of how our country functions.

Dave Koynok and Sam Paul @ Ligonier Tavern!

Dave Koynok (formerly of The Random Brothers) and Sam Paul (The Bricks) will be joining musical talents again today (9/29) at the Ligonier Tavern!  It's a 4:00 p.m. start time, so come on over!  Enjoy the music and stay for dinner!

Does this sound like an advocate for freedom of speech?

"The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see and the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated or churches that are destroyed. Or the Holocaust that is denied."

What does that mean "the future must not belong"?  Whose condemning whom and what does condemnation mean?  Does this statement support the rights of rioters and killers?  I an atheist speaks blasphemy does the future not belong to that person?  What does this mean?

oh...paaleeease...a global tax??

A 1 percent tax on billionaires around the world.  A tax on all currency trading in the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen and the British pound sterling.   Another  “tiny”  tax on all financial transactions, including stock and bond trading, and trading in financial derivatives.  New taxes on carbon emissions and on airline tickets.  A royalty on all undersea mineral resources extracted more than 100 miles offshore of any nation’s territory

Christians flee from Islamists

AFP - Several Christian families have fled their homes in Egypt's Sinai peninsula after receiving death threats from suspected Islamist militants, officials and residents told AFP on Friday.

Last week, flyers began circulating in the town of Rafah on the Gaza Strip border demanding that its tiny Coptic population move out, residents said.

Officials at the local church informed the authorities of the threats, but no action was taken, they added.

Mountain Palace - Chinese & English Karaoke!

See yourself on the big screen while singing your favorite song! It's like a preview before you appear on American Idol and jumbo trons all over the world. Karaoke therapy continues at Mountain Palace. We have about 5,000 songs in English and Chinese as you can see above. Somehow Lacy keeps getting the higher scores which I don't understand at all. Maybe there is some validity to the lady's comment, when hearing me sing "Ju ni shang er quai le" ("Happy Birthday" in Chinese) to another customer, of "I hope you can cook better than you sing!" This weekend's special is pork with seaweed and rice for $8.95. The health benefits of seaweed are enormous including keeping the digestive system healthy and working properly, providing iodine needed by the thyroid to help keep it working properly, facilitating the function of the immune system, providing anti-inflammatory properties to relieve inflammation and body pains naturally, and resistance to colon, prostate and breast cancer. Come to Mountain Palace to enjoy some authentic homemade northern Chinese food, get healthy, and have fun! Friday 6 to 10, Saturday 12 to 10 and Sunday 12 to 6. Eleven miles north of Ligonier left off of Route 711 onto Creek Road directly across from Mirror Lake.  724 717-8614  www.mountainpalace.net

kill the "blasphemous contortionist."

Scores of people were injured Saturday in clashes with police as protests continued in the Muslim world against the most recent Adobe Acrobat update, downloaded Friday to one of the region's fifteen computers. Released by an American-based software company, the update allegedly provided "critical fixes improving security, stability and performance," while also addressing a number of "high priority bugs," which many in the Muslim world see as an insult to their way of life.

"Why are Americans always telling us that we need an update?" an imam addressed a raging crowd of followers in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka. "The very suggestion that we need a 'critical fix' to improve the 'handling of errors' is yet another example of America's arrogance. Our system is superior to theirs and any suggestion that it 'misses a plug-in' is an imperialist attempt to impose their blasphemous lifestyle on true believers."

The Beanery Writers Group September 24 & October 1, 2012, Writing Prompts

I’ve been attempting, sometimes (no, often) unsuccessfully, to send out a bi-monthly prompt from the Beanery Writers Group. I keep hearing that recipients of the prompt are writing even if they don’t send me the results. Some have sent the results, and some have been posted. I will continue sending out the prompts weekly (or at least try weekly) as long as I keep receiving positive responses.
SEPTEMBER 24, 2012 WRITING PROMPT
 Spend fifteen minutes freewriting about the town or city in which you grew up. Focus on the people, the places, the landscape, and the memories surrounding them. Where was your favorite place to eat? Who were the most interesting characters? What did you do with your family and friends? What did the school look like? Where did you go when you wanted to run away?  (http://www.pw.org/writing-prompts-exercises)
OCTOBER 1, 2012 WRITING PROMPT
 Make a list of 5 things you're afraid to write about.   (http://us.mg6.mail.yahoo.com/neo/launch )
The prompt results can be sent to beanerywriters@yahoo.com
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sit down for 7 minutes and just write. Then, if you feel so inclined, develop your 7 minute writing further.
Send your results to beanerywriters@yahoo.com . Even though we haven’t responded to each submitter, some responses have turned into posts on the Beanery Online Literary Magazine (http://www.beanerywriters.wordpress.com/).
NOTE: The Beanery Online Literary Magazine seeks submissions for the autumn and winterseasons.
The Beanery Writers Group meets the second and fourth Fridays (except the first Friday in October, and the second Friday in November and December). It is open to writers in all genres, either seeking assistance on a single project or ongoing membership.
The next meeting date is Friday, SEPTEMBER 28, 2012, 1:00-3:00 p. m., at the regular place---the Coffee Bean Café (on Rt. 30 in LATROBE across from the former outdoor theater and present CVS Drug Store). Gather early for sociability and/or eats. The back room is being reserved from noon to three-thirty, so we can gather and socialize without taking up the space for customers at the coffee shop.
war on coal
Within the next three to five years, more than 200 coal-fired electric generating units will be shut down across 25 states due to EPA regulations and factors including cheap natural gas, according to a new report by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE).
“This is further evidence that EPA is waging a war on coal, and a war on affordable electricity prices and jobs. EPA continues to ignore the damage that its new regulations are causing to the U.S. economy and to states that depend on coal for jobs and affordable electricity,” said Mike Duncan, president and CEO of ACCCE, in a statement.
THE way Kevin McClatchy figured it, he had to choose.
THE way Kevin McClatchy figured it, he had to choose. He could indulge his dream of presiding over a big-time professional sports team, or he could be open about his sexuality. The two paths didn’t dovetail.
He went with sports, and in February 1996, at the age of 33, became the youngest owner in major league baseball when he led a group of investors who bought the Pittsburgh Pirates. For the next 11 years, he was the team’s managing general partner and chief executive officer, not to mention its public face. And for all of that time, he took pains not to let his players, the owners of other teams or anyone beyond a tiny circle of family and close friends learn that he was gay.
ALERT large white dog running loose
I just saw a large white dog run across the top of our drive and back onto Route 711 near Clifford Estates.  Cars slowed for it and by the time I got my leash and got to the top of the property I couldn't see it anywhere.  It was running full speed.
 It might be in the plan or it might have moved on to the farms up the road.
“Taxmageddon”
Sunday will mark the start of the 100-day countdown to “Taxmageddon” – the date the largest tax hikes in the history of America will take effect.  They will hit families and small businesses in three great waves on January 1, 2013:
First Wave: Expiration of 2001 and 2003 Tax Relief
In 2001 and 2003, the GOP Congress enacted several tax cuts for small business owners, families, and investors (later re-upped by President Obama and Democrat Congress in 2010).  The following tax hikes will occur on January 1, 2013:
A “how-to” session on floral arranging
On Sunday, September 23 at 2:00 p.m. Mary Jo Bullington will conduct a “how-to” session on floral arranging at the Lincoln Highway Experience museum. For the past three years Bullington has been the official florist of An Affair with Lincoln, the annual Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor gala, where her one-of-a-kind designs never fail to impress with their explosions of color and eye-catching constructions. Bullington, a Pittsburgh resident, has long delighted family and friends with her floral flair. Believing that no two arrangements should be the same, she fashions displays that complement the surroundings they are designed for and express her artistic viewpoint. In addition to outlining design principles at her presentation, Bullington will show how to choose flowers and foliage to maximize color and texture, and reveal how to group flowers to achieve a pleasing and balanced composition. Participants will create their own autumn arrangement that they can take away to brighten their own home or give as a gift. The Lincoln Highway Experience is located at 3435 Route 30 East (near Kingston Dam) in Unity Township, Westmoreland County. Advance reservations are required. Call 724-879-4241 to reserve your spot (we have only 4 seats left as of Wednesday afternoon). A fee of $20 per person will include flowers, floral container, and all necessary related materials as well as refreshments.
PITTSBURGH DAD: WATCHING THE PIRATES
a great divide
"I was talking about the fact I don't expect to get 60-70 percent of the vote," Romney said. "I understand some portion will be the president's. Some portion will be mine. I've got to get as many as I can from every single cohort in this country. The intent I want to talk about was the fact you have a great divide about whether we want a government that is larger and more intrusive and redistributing income or instead you wanted have government had a protecting freedom and opportunity and letting more people build more wealth."
http://thehill.com/video/campaign/250183-romney-pushes-new-audio-of-old-obama-redistribution-comment
I agree that we have a great divide.  We are at a crossroads and the decision made in this election is a big deal.  As a libertarian, I'd like to draw a line in the sand and start pealing back big government.  I believe we have a shot at doing that if Romney/Ryan win.  If Obama/Biden win, I have a hard time imagining where the country will end up but I don't think I'll recognize it.
investigation continues
Westmoreland County investigators probing the suspicious death of a 25-year-old Southwest Greensburg woman executed a search warrant at a doctor's home where her body was discovered last Friday.
William J. Monsour II, 57, of Ligonier Township told police he discovered Mia Vottero lifeless in his bed Friday morning after the two had been out to a bar and had slept together. An autopsy was performed Saturday, but the Westmoreland County coroner's office said results were pending the outcome of further tests.
We like to sing Leonard Cohen songs and Beatles mixed in with folk tunes and oldies and not so oldies and meditative musical improv, Dmitri style. It's all very casual and not a professional performance - very pub or salon style.
MM usually starts around 7:30 on Tuesday evenings and runs until 9:30. Folks at Mellow Mike play harmonicas, tambourines, drums, shakers or just sit and listen or get up and dance.
To give you a flavor of songs, we'll probably sing Hallelujah, Let It Be, Woodstock, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Who By Fire, Little Red Riding Hood....fun stuff like that. Got it? We'll mix in a few local poets and hopefully Pete will do some Dylan.  ;)
