fire alarms saved family

A Westmoreland County fire chief said a Ligonier Township family's quick exit from their burning home early Monday is “a textbook example of why we promote changing batteries in smoke alarms this time of year.”
The Nathan Hughes family along Route 711, about one mile south of Ligonier, escaped injury in the 1:40 a.m. blaze that severely damaged their two-story home.
“The fire alarms woke them up and they were able to get out of the house and also rescue several family pets. This is why we preach to families to change batteries in smoke alarms at the same time the leaves change,” McDowell said.
