liberty...freedom.....This is what we cherish.

When we emotionally remember those who fought and died to preserve our liberty and freedom, let us connect the meaning of those concepts to our politics.

When we seek to control others with whom we disagree, we take up the mantel of those our heroes fought.

When we seek to control others with whom we disagree, we devalue the worth of every precious person who fought and died to create and preserve a free country.

Pakistan Christian Teenager Tortured To Death By Mob At Muslim Seminary - from the Catholic Herald Archive

A MUSLIM MOB in Pakistan tortured a Christian teenager to death after he drank water from the tap of an Islamic seminary, it emerged this week.
Javaid Anjum, a 19-yearold student of commerce in Quetta, Eastern Pakistan, was tortured for five days. A gang of Islamic students gave him electric shocks, broke his arm and his fingers, and pulled out his fingernails. The electric shocks caused his kidneys to fail. He was taken to hospital, where doctors tried to keep him alive on dialysis machines, but he died earlier this month.
Mr Anjum had gone to visit his grandfather in Toba Tek Singh, Punjab, and felt thirsty while at a bus stop. When he found a tap inside the compound of Jamia Hussainbin-Murtaza, an Islamic seminary, he drank from it. Immediately, he was accosted by Ghulam Rasool, a famous Islamic preacher, and a gang of his students.

Allegory Gallery Announces New Classes

We at Allegory Gallery have been busily working on getting a schedule of classes together, as well as working on our NEW classroom facility.  We've nicknamed the additional classroom area as "the Annex".  It is conveniently located next to Earth Lotus Yoga Studio on Route 711.  The Annex will be open for classes and by appointment.

The classes that we have listed so far take place this June and July!  We have ones scheduled that are taught by Maria Richmond, Alisa Barnhart, and Jan Durkin!  We will be adding more classes to the summer line-up, including ones on paper crafts and poetry!  The classes are all very reasonably priced.  Compared to some of the prices at the national conventions, they are a 1/4th of the cost!  (Plus, if you are a local, they are located in your own backyard and you don't have to pay for travel or lodging!)

If you're interested in finding out more about these classes, CLICK HERE.  You can also sign up online or if you'd rather, you can sign up in person at the store!  Reserve your spot as soon as possible!  An early head count helps us make preparations for the classes.  Hope to see you at one of the classes!

fracking news

On May 16, 2013, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released a Supplemental Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and Request for Comment regarding hydraulic fracturing on BLM-administered public and Indian lands (Revised Proposed Rule). This Revised Proposed Rule was issued in response to comments on the initial draft Proposed Rulepublished on May 11, 2012 (Initial Proposed Rule). The BLM received over 177,000 comments on the Initial Proposed Rule. The impetus for this proposed rule is the increasing incursion of drilling and development activity in populated areas, which has raised public awareness and intensified regulatory scrutiny of hydraulic fracturing. This issue, coupled with the fact that BLM’s hydraulic fracturing regulations are outdated (established in 1982 and last updated in 1988), has caused the BLM to conclude that there is a need to revise its regulations to “modernize” BLM’s management of hydraulic fracturing operations and create a “uniform” national standard for operations on BLM-managed oil and gas resources.
The Initial Proposed Rule required operators to (1) disclose to the public the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, after the fracturing operation is completed; (2) confirm that wells used in fracturing operations meet appropriate construction standards to ensure well-bore integrity; and (3) require operators to employ appropriate plans for managing flowback waters from fracturing operations. In addition to these three main components — which remain in the Revised Proposed Rule — the Revised Proposed Rule also requires the use of an expanded set of cement evaluation tools (rather than cement bond logs) to ensure that water resources are being protected and provides more detailed guidance on disclosure requirements, modeling Colorado’s rule, which adopts FracFocus as the disclosure medium and entitles operators to trade secret protections. Furthermore, the Revised Proposed Rule would allow operators to seek a variance from the BLM rules allowing deference to states and tribes that already have standards in place that meet or exceed those proposed by this rule in order to reduce administrative costs, eliminate duplication, and improve efficiency.  Significantly, the variances would apply only to operational activities, including monitoring and testing technologies, and do not apply to the actual approval process for obtaining a permit to drill from the BLM.

police looking for Adam Trax

State Police are asking for help finding a man who they say walked into a Westmoreland County Walmart last week and held up the pharmacy with a BB gun he stole from the store.

State police have a warrant for the arrest of Adam Trax, 30, on armed robbery and related charges. His last known address was in Ligonier.

Trooper Stephen Limani of the Greensburg barracks said authorities believe Trax may be in the Pittsburgh area.

'Corporate Colonialism' Runs Wild as 'Growth' Bulldozes Forests

"Corporate colonialism" is bringing farmer deaths, poverty, human rights violations and ecological catastrophe to Indonesia with little recourse for the local communities who suffer the effects of projects touted as "growth," the Guardian's John Vidal reports. In the match between corporate power and the poor in the archipelago, the number of conflicts is on the rise. "More than 600 were recorded in 2011, with 22 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The true number is probably far greater, say watchdog groups." " The scale of the conflicts is growing. Every day new ones are reported. More and more police are now in the plantations. Government is trying to clamp down on mass protests," Vidal reports Abetnego Tarigan, director of Friends of the Earth Indonesia in Jakarta, as saying.

"Who controls the land in Indonesia controls the politics. Corruption is massive around natural resources. We are seeing a new corporate colonialism. In the Suharto era you were sent to prison for talking about the government. Now you can be sent there for talking about corporations," says Tarigan. Here, as in so much of the world, corporate power trumps all. "These developments are classed as 'growth' but what we are seeing is the collapse of communities of fisherfolk or farmers and increasing poverty," he continues.  "We are exchanging biodiversity for monocultures, local economies for global ones, small-scale producers are becoming labourers and community land is becoming corporate. This is the direction we are going."

narrow minded hypocritcs - PETA

The Huffington Post ran an article last month entitled “Shocking Photos: PETA’s Secret Slaughter of Kittens, Puppies.” It garnered nearly 5,000 comments and 244,000 Facebook likes. The article photo-documented PETA’s hypocritical actions of claiming to be outraged over “inhumane” animal treatment, but at the same time, slaughtering thousands of animals, throwing kittens and puppies in dumpsters, etc.
Curiously, PETA aren’t going after the author of that article. They’re going after a few commenters on that article.
One of those commenters called PETA “animal Kevorkians.” The animal slaughter organization wants the court to release names, e-mail addresses and other personal information about commenters like that one. They have to at least identify the people in order to sue them for defamation.

Join the Millions Against Monsanto, the company who's "engineering" your food

Background: http://www.organicconsumers.org/monsanto/.

Summary: GMO seeds — considered “intellectual property” by the big companies like Monsanto who own the patents — are globally marketed to monopolize food production and profits. Opponents challenge the safety of genetically modified seeds, claiming they also harm the environment, are more costly, and leave local farmers deep in debt as well as dependent on suppliers. Corn and soybeans are mostly all GMOed... . Aided by the fact that the Monsantos, et al, refuse to LABEL their products as containing GMOs, you are literally a real-time experiment being run by corporations -- with the help of our elected officials, who they pay off -- without your permission or knowledge.
Join Pittsburgh's contingent in the Millions Against Monsanto March today in The Strip District at 2pm. From their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/events/139242292922381/): "Starting at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church (57 21st Street) in the Strip District we will walk southwest on 21st Street, turn right onto Liberty Ave and left onto Grant St."

See you there!

German Brewers Declare: "Don't Frack With Our Beer!"

German brewers are warning officials that the country's highly prized beer industry may be in jeopardy if the practice of fracking becomes widespread.

"The Association of German Breweries, which represents companies including Anheuser-Busch and Bitburger Braugruppe, rejected a government proposal for a law that would set parameters on the practice of hydraulic fracturing, allegedly protecting certain areas. "The water has to be pure and more than half Germany's brewers have their own wells which are situated outside areas that could be protected under the government's current planned legislation on fracking," said an association spokesman. "You cannot be sure that the water won't be polluted by chemicals so we have urged the government to carry out more research before it goes ahead with a fracking law," he added.

The high possibility of groundwater pollution as a result of fracking threatens the country's 500-year-old industry rule on water purity. Under the "Reinheitsgebot" (purity mandate), brewers have to produce beer using only malt, hops, yeast and water. According to reports, the association has sent a letter voicing its concerns to six Cabinet ministers including Environment Minister Peter Altmaier."

Too bad many Americans weren't this concerned about our water before giving it away to the oil and gas industry.

Snuggly Bear...and bipartisan partisanship!

Would you rather have freedom of the press, or be snuggly and secure?

A 2-minute video cartoon: "Don't Worry About the AP Scandal"

http://www.markfiore.com/political-cartoons/watch-doj-eric-holder-obama-department-of-justice-spying-associated-press-animated-video-mark-fiore-political#comment-14155

"Greetings, from the Department of Justice! It's me, Snuggly the Security Bear-- here to tell you all about spying on the press! See, I'm not scary, and neither is Attorney General Eric Holder! So what if we secretly snooped into the phone records of a hundred or so journalists-- it was all to keep you snuggly and secure-- trust us! Heeheeheehee! Those people in the Associated Press are helping the terrorists by protecting their sources and stuff. We're just trying to keep you safe . . . from people in government who leak things to the media! Which is why my boss Obama has prosecuted more whistleblowe-- er-- criminals-- than all previous presidents combined! But before we nail 'em, we've got to find 'em-- by doing things like secretly looking into the phone logs of journalists . . . at the office, at home, at the capitol, or in the men's room!

Would you rather have Freedom of the Press or would you rather be more snuggly and secure with the most transparent administration ever! Best part is-- my warm hugs of security, are bipartisan! Republicans are outraged now, and Democrats were outraged about two-thousand and four!. . . which keeps them not-outraged in reverse! Partisanship can be so bipartisan. So of course you can have your Freedom of the Press and confidential sources-- as long as your confidential sources don't mind the government having their phone numbers! Heeheeheehee!"

Mountain Palace - Cumin Chicken Special & Chinese Exercise!

Mountain Palace has cumin chicken with vegetables and rice as a weekend special. Sunshine Club Chinese exercise will continue at 11:00 Saturday morning with bone/joint and active motion activities. Lacy will include paida stimulation of pressure point areas to benefit circulation, diabetes and digestion. Such stimulation reduces pressure point blockage along the nerve paths. Stimulating points on the nerve path relative to diabetes facilitates insulin secretion. Come to Mountain Palace this weekend to enjoy our authentic northern Chinese food that is both tasty and nutritious. You may also come to benefit from the ancient Chinese exercises and pressure point stimulation activities. Friday 6 to 9, Saturday 12 to 9 and Sunday 12 to 6. We will not be open Monday for Memorial Day. Eleven miles north of Ligonier left off of Route 711 onto Creek Road directly across from Mirror Lake.  724 717-8614  www.mountainpalace.net

Bees bring new buzz to Capitol Hill...will they save us from ourselves?

Can the farm bill help save the bees? Can the bees help save the farm bill from itself?

"It’s an 'only-in-Washington' drama that opens Tuesday and Wednesday as the Senate and House agriculture committees mark up their new five-year plans, which are worth tens of billions of dollars to American farmers over the next decade. The powerful crop insurance industry and old-line commodity lobbies like rice, cotton and corn will be at the table defending their share. But the big newcomer is the bee, which has been disappearing in record numbers and become a symbol of much that is haywire in the current system.Indeed, the number of honeybee colonies in the U.S. fell by nearly a third this past winter according to government data released last week. That’s a big jump from the prior winter and the latest evidence of a steady decline that recently led Europe to impose new pesticide restrictions — alarming corporations like Germany’s Bayer AG with major operations in the U.S.
Native American bees as well as the honeybee — more often used in managed pollination — are affected, and the threat to agriculture is real. Billions in annual farm income could be lost given the bee’s importance to scores of specialty crops from tomato and pumpkin patches to fruit trees and California’s almond industry. Most important politically, the bee’s plight puts a face — or stinger — on long-standing complaints about the insular nature of Washington’s approach to farm policy. “I consider it one of the world’s very crucial issues, I mean that most sincerely,” said Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), that rare combination, a former zoology student with a seat on the House Rules Committee. “If you don’t have no bees, you don’t have no food.”

This 9-Year-Old Girl Told McDonald's CEO: Stop Tricking Kids

Out of the mouths of babes...comes the truth.

"It's not every day that a 9-year-old girl chastises the CEO of one of the world's biggest fast-food chains.Yet that's exactly what young Hannah Robertson did Thursday morning at McDonald's annual shareholders meeting in Chicago. When the meeting opened up to questions, Hannah was first up at the mic with a pointed criticism. "It would be nice if you stopped trying to trick kids into wanting to eat your food all the time," she told McDonald's CEO Don Thompson. Ouch.
Hannah, a native of Kelowna, British Columbia, didn't get to Chicago on her own, of course. She and her mother, Kia Robertson, who blogs* about how parents can help kids make healthful food choices, showed up as part of a contingent from the watchdog group Corporate Accountability International. "We want them to stop their predatory marketing to kids," says Sriram Madhusoodanan, a national campaign organizer with the group. Corporate Accountability has been pushing McDonald's to change its ways for years. Two years ago, it launched a so far unsuccessful bid urging McDonald's to retire Ronald, its famous clown mascot. Its latest social media campaign involves harnessing the power of mom bloggers like Robertson to tell McDonald's that they're "" the company's efforts targeting kids, such as including toys in Happy Meals."

bet this woman wished she had a gun....

The woman told the dispatcher that Bellah previously attacked her and left her hospitalized a few weeks prior to the latest incident. The dispatcher stayed on the phone with the woman for more than 10 minutes before the sexual assault took place.
“Once again it’s unfortunate you guys don’t have any law enforcement out there,” the dispatcher said, according to Oregon Public Radio.

"But it is."

There is, regrettably, a loud rump group of Obama dead-enders on the left who strain and struggle to insulate the president from blame, who take the role of defense attorney and who go searching for helpful snippets to bolster the president ( a few answers from one poll, the possibility of GOP overreach, the willingness to assert the president didn’t and couldn’t know what was going on, etc.). Whereas before the dam broke, the eager- beaver Obama defenders blended into the generally liberal media landscape, they now stand out like exasperated riders trying to restrain a media stampede galloping away from White House.
Their telltale uniformity produces a parade of stale arguments:
  • The White House just “mishandled” the press storm.
  • The public doesn’t care about any of this.
  • The right just wants to get Hillary Clinton and/or the president.
  • There is nothing tying any of this to the president.
  • There is a mid-level bureaucrat (well maybe a lot of them, apparently in many departments or agencies) responsible for the screw-up.
  • This is all a distraction from really important things.
  • We expect too much of the president.
What is remarkable is that the dead-enders adopt all of these arguments virtually all of the time. The common theme that governs every argument (or tweet, or post or article) is “It’s not Obama’s fault.” But it is.

mystery in the Sea of Galilee

The massive circular structure appears to be an archaeologists dream: a recently discovered antiquity that could reveal secrets of ancient life in the Middle East and is just waiting to be excavated.

It's thousands of years old -- a conical, manmade behemoth weighing hundreds of tons, practically begging to be explored.

The problem is -- it's at the bottom of the biblical Sea of Galilee. For now, at least, Israeli researchers are left stranded on dry land, wondering what finds lurk below.

Documents Show Exxon Lied in Aftermath of Tar Sands Pipeline Rupture

The cove of Lake Conway which Exxon claimed was “oil-free”:
"Internal ExxonMobil documents obtained through an Freedom of Information Act request by Greenpeace shows that the oil giant misled the public about the degree to which the spill of more than 200,000 galllons of tar sands oil in Arkansas had contaminated local waterways. Following the rupture of the Pegasus pipeline in the town of Mayflower on March 29, area residents were increasingly concerned that Lake Conway had been contaminated. Despite overwhelming evidence that tar sands oil was in the lake, ExxonMobil publicly said this was not the case."

"The Environmental Protection Agency and the American Petroleum Institute don’t agree on everything, but they do agree that the only safe level of Benzene, a cancer-causing chemical found in oil, is zero. Benzene is added to tar sands oil to make it less viscous and flow more easily through pipelines.  Local people have reported fish kills, chemical smells, nausea and headaches. Independent water tests have found a host of contaminants present in the lake.

Frackalypse Now: A Very Timely Battle

With Illinois poised to approve fracking - and regulations they swear will protect them - Gasland II, the second part of Josh Fox' acclaimed anti-fracking documentary, kicked off a 23-stop nationwide tour of the film with a free showing in Normal sponsored by Illinois People’s Action. The film  tells stories of fracking victims and explores the financial clout of Big Oil - best if perversely exemplified by industry use of psychological warfare, or psyops, to "manufacture consent," as Chomsky once famously put it. In honor of their tactics, cartoonist Mark Fiore has created a new video.** (With apologies to Francis Ford Coppola.)

UFO reported over Ligonier

armed women

State Representative Joe Salazar recently drew fire for telling the Colorado legislature that college women should arm themselves with rape whistles rather than guns.
“And you don’t know, if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around, or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be,” Salazar said, “that you pop out that gun and you pop … pop a round at somebody.”

Salazar’s comments suggest he thinks college-age women are not competent to use guns safely. But they also suggest he isn’t aware of just how many lives are saved by people with guns and the role guns can play in leveling the playing field between women and their assailants.
I have firsthand experience.

In 2003, while out riding mountain trails on a dirt bike and an ATV, my husband and I were attacked. The crazed man approached with a large rock. After a physical confrontation with my husband, I drew the 9mm on my belt and fired. Only then did the attacker flee. If my six-foot-three, 220-pound husband couldn’t fend off the man, how effective would a 130-pound woman blowing a rape whistle have been in a similar circumstance? That gun probably saved both of our lives that day.
