John West is honored by the Ligonier Country Market

When the air horn blows to mark the start of the final Ligonier Country Market of the season Saturday morning, John West will be sounding the horn, signifying to the vendors they are open for business.
“John comes to the market before 8 a.m. every Saturday and hangs around the manager's tent hoping to blow the horn. We call him our Horatio Hornblower,” said board treasurer David Maniago of Ligonier.
West, who recently turned 88, is a founding father of the Saturday market that has been going strong in the Ligonier Valley since 1976.
“John is the keeper of the flame. He keeps the legend of the origin of the market alive and relevant.”
