Ligonier fracking advice in PG

Ligonier Township is establishing new zoning that could permit the industrial practice of hydro fracturing (fracking) within large portions of the Loyalhanna Watershed, which contains headwater streams that supply drinking water for both Ligonier and Latrobe.
Township officials appear to understand the risk of water contamination from the hydro-fracturing process, as evidenced by a recent proposed zoning map which includes a “wellhead protection zone” surrounding Ligonier’s municipal water sources in the northeast corner of the township. But they would be wise — for health as well as legal reasons — to provide the same protection for Latrobe’s municipal water, the main source of which originates in underground springs in the northwest section of the township.
