negotiations on the sale of the school move forward

Ligonier Valley School District will enter into negotiations with Western PA Coal Resorts LLC, an entity of Coal Capital Holdings LLC, for the sale of the defunct Laurel Valley Middle High School.
The school board voted, 5-4, Monday night to approve a resolution authorizing the district to negotiate the sale of the school at 114 Education Lane near New Florence, next to Laurel Valley Elementary School. The approval included two added stipulations — that the district negotiations committee include four, not three, board members and that the committee not finalize an agreement of sale without board approval.
Coal Capital Holdings LLC wishes to lease the shuttered school building in St. Clair to Retreat, a for-profit drug and alcohol rehabilitation company.
The proposed sale price is $1.75 million for the 103,360-square-foot building and 65.5 acres of land surrounding it.
Voting in favor of the resolution were board members Carolyn Shafer, John McDowell, John Klinchock, Irma Hutchinson and Irvin Tantlinger. Dissenting were Kim Dickert-Wallace, John Maier, David Wilcox and JoAnn Thistlethwaite.
